1961-2011
Formation:
Gana Kala was established under the Societies Registration Act on 18 Nov 1961. The main objectives are:
A) To Promote and foster Fine Arts by conducting music concerts, classes and schools in music, dance, drama and other connected literature
B) Awarding scholarships, stipends, prizes or other concessions to deserving persons in the field of Fine Arts
C) To establish and conduct educational institutions
D) To encourage and assist in pursuing education by awarding scholarships, stipends, prizes and or other concessions to deserving pupils
E) To render services in Educational, Social and cultural fields in general and to such other lawful things as are incidental or conducive to the promotion or attainment of the above objects or any of them
Late Shri V.Swaminathan Iyer (first President) spearheaded the establishment and initial activities assisted by 16 other prominent and like minded individuals
§ Registered under Public Trusts Act of 1950 on 26th March 1962.
§ Started functioning from the premises of some of the members. With about 498members from different walks of life.
§ Commenced its activities in a humble way and the first AGM was held on 30th Sept 1962.
Formative Years :
1966/67
§ First music concert in March 1966 was by Late Shri Alathur Srinivasa Iyer and the first scholarship in education was also in year ended March 1966.
§ Music classes in vocal started with about 26 students- a small beginning.
1968/1976
§ Sustained the music school activities. Membership increased to 563
§ First own Premises 1977/78.
§ Tamil Dramas by reputed R S Manohar troupe were enacted with good measure of success and with surplus generated purchased, one BHK flat in Shiv Sadan, Goregaon (W), Mumbai.
1979/1984
§ Music concerts by doyens of classical music were conducted such as DR.M.D.Ramanathan, Veena vidwan Dorai Swami iyer and others .
§ Pursued music school activities. Conducted Thyagaraja Aradhana & Music festival was organised. Well appreciated by the audience.
1985-1986.
§ Hosted SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS by organising MUSIC,DANCE,DRAMA festival for 9 days.
§ Leading Musicians MS, Radha Jaya Lakshmi, T.V.Shankara Narayanan, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan performed to the raving appreciation of the audience.
§ Dance Ballet by Chitra Visweswaran and Tamil dramas by Delhi Ganesh were talk of the day.
1987-1992.
§ Introduced Patron/ Life Membership. Enhanced membership fee . Introduced classes in violin, mridangam and Dance and the student strength increased to 104.
1993-1998
§ School strength increased to 240. Abhang introduced with 10 students. Dr.D.K.Pattammal was felicitated for Kalidas Sanmanam.
1999-2004
§ Dance school staged graduation function for 3 students which was appreciated by the parents and this event enhanced the popularity of dance school.
§ With the financial support from several corporates & Individuals Gana Kala Purchased spacious premises in Triveni at Shastri Nagar, Goregaon (W).
2005-2009.
§ Annual graduation of the dance school students continued during the period.
§ The new premises are fully air-conditioned for comfort of the audience.
§ Music Committee for improving the visibility etc of the music school was setup.
2010-2011
§ Gana Kala entered into the GOLDEN JUBILEE YEAR in NOV 2010
§ Golden Jubilee Committee consisting of prominent persons was constituted to have the benefit of collective wisdom of the members.
§ Redesign of logo of Gana Kala and Revised Vision / Mission Statement.
§ Grand festival of Music,Dance and Drama for 7 days from 7th Nov to 13 th Nov was organised in which leading performing artists participated.
§ Leading Public Sector Banks. Several Corporates/individuals/members contributed financial sponsorships.
§ Ganakala Profusely thank all those who participated in the Golden Jubilee celebrations by extending their support for a grand success.
